The exhibition INSTRUMENTALIZED! by Beate Engl, Justin Lieberman and Pancho Schlehhuber shows an expansive installation in the Rathausgalerie with a prepared pianola that works without human operation. This unusual apparatus is “programmed” with a paper music roll whose punched-out dots depict a star map of the night sky. At the same time, a light source projects the constellations into the room through the perforated paper roll. The result is a superimposition of delicate, lyrical light effects in the room and a sound reminiscent of the abstract compositions of the early 20th century.
